Double Glazed Units: Some times we get complaints that we have not washed the windows properly and they are still smeared. More often than not the windows are perfectly clean outside and what has happened is the double glazing unit has 'blown'. Double glazed units are two sheets of glass forming a sealed unit. Over time this seal may breakdown and let in moisture. This may be hard to spot at first and is only visible in certain lights and when the sun warms the glass up. Typically, moisture is drawn in as the atmospheric pressure changes, and gradually builds up, eventually condensing into small water droplets inside the sealed unit. This is what causes the window to fog up and can look like smears on the glass. When the glazing unit has started to deteriate the only answer is to replace it with a new ones. This does not need to be a major job and usually means little or no alteration or disruption to the window frame as long as it is sound. Sealed glass units are designed to be removable and replaceable. The result can be quite startling when a unit has deteriated as much as that in the example below.
